StreamSCAPES at DIMPACT 2026: Leading the Sustainable Transition for the VOD Ecosystem
Last week, Mafalda Dâmaso represented the StreamSCAPES consortium at the DIMPACT Annual Summit, joining a high-level panel alongside Daniel Schien (University of Bristol) and Elisabeth Sullivan (techUK).
The summit brought together a focused group of industry changemakers—including representatives from the BBC, Google, Netflix, Spotify, and Oxford University—to align on science-based solutions for the digital media sector.
As DIMPACT is a valued member of our International Advisory Board, this event served as a vital platform to present emerging findings on how the cultural and creative sectors, specifically Video-On-Demand (VOD) platforms, can lead the sustainable climate transition (SCT).
Three Critical Challenges for the Green Audiovisual Transition
Mafalda highlighted the core tensions currently shaping the European policy landscape:
- The Policy "Carrot and Stick": Policymakers must drive sustainability without stifling the growth of European digital players or overburdening SMEs with complex reporting.
- Harmonisation vs. Fragmentation: While some regions (France, Germany, Nordics) lead with advanced carbon reporting, others lag behind. Paradoxically, leaders in the field often resist EU-wide standards, fearing a "race to the bottom" that could slow their progress.
- Green Conditionality: Following the UK’s Media Act, we are seeing a shift in public service obligations for streamers. A key question for our upcoming research with Sergio Goffredo: Will the European Commission eventually link streamer catalogue access to "green conditionality"?
