The StreamSCAPES consortium is proud to announce the release of its latest publication, officially unveiled during the high-level panel "Greening Streaming: Europe–Latin America Policy Dialogue" at the Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film) on May 13, 2026.

This new report delivers crucial insights from the project’s initial phases, mapping out how Video-on-Demand (VOD) services across Europe are navigating the Sustainable Climate Transition (SCT).

Mapping Policies and Industry Realities

To understand the friction points and enablers of a greener VOD ecosystem, the study combines two extensive research strands:

  • Policy Mapping: A deep dive into the legislative frameworks of nine countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and North Macedonia), supported by 16 expert interviews.
  • Industry Practices: A field-level analysis based on 5 stakeholder workshops and 13 semi-structured interviews conducted with European VOD platform professionals to explore how sustainability is operationalised across production, distribution, and consumption.

Key Takeaways: Addressing Gaps and Bridging Continents

The publication provides a preliminary blueprint of the European VOD ecosystem, identifying structural challenges and highlighting three critical policy needs expressed by industry stakeholders:

  1. Increase knowledge and foster cross-sector knowledge exchange.
  2. Harmonise sustainability metrics and frameworks.
  3. Address sectoral asymmetries to ensure a fair transition for independent services.

Crucially, in alignment with the Cannes dialogue hosted alongside the CAACI, the report outlines three policy avenues to strengthen cooperation between the EU and Latin America, focusing on co-developing green transition scenarios, rethinking global digital infrastructure, and eliminating operational blind spots in current audiovisual policies.
